It’s tough to navigate the vast market of online backup solutions. That’s why we’ve compiled a list of the best online backup solutions to help you choose. That said, if you still can’t make up your mind and you’re weighing CloudBerry Backup vs Acronis True Image, you’re in the right place. We’re going to compare them in this article to see which service is better.
Acronis True Image is a standard online backup service, but CloudBerry Backup needs a partner service because it isn’t. Rather, it is an infrastructure-as-a-service solution that doesn’t offer backup space and works like a control center that helps you manage backup plans on other cloud storage services.
For this bout, we’re pairing CloudBerry Backup with Wasabi because it has excellent pricing and server infrastructure. The service is inexpensive and scalable, meaning you can set the size of storage you want and dictate how much you pay. You can find more information about it in our Wasabi review.
If you want to know more about the competitors, read our CloudBerry Backup review and Acronis True Image review. If you’re reading this and have cloud storage in mind, read our explanation of the difference between cloud storage and backup.
It’s prudent to use cloud backup because your hard drive might crash, someone could steal your laptop or some other accident might cause you to lose your data.
You can use data recovery software to try to recover your files, but that’s not a reliable method. Solid-state drives aren’t reliable, either, because they experience more data errors, even though their failure rate is less than 1 percent.
Over five rounds, we’re going to see how the services compare to each other. At the end of each, we’ll name a winner. Then, at the conclusion, we’ll do a recap and declare the overall winner.
Value
It’s best if the service has plans that offer good value, meaning they provide more backup space for less money. It’s even better if there’s a wide selection of plans, so you can find one that fits your needs. It’s great if the provider offers a free plan or trial, too, so you can test the service. If you’re looking for unlimited backup, check out our best unlimited online backup list.
Unlike most cloud backup providers, which charge you by number of computer and gigabytes of space, CloudBerry Backup requires you to buy a one-time license. At $49.99, Desktop is the cheapest option. The most expensive one, Ultimate, runs $299.99. You can test the Desktop backup with a 15-day free trial before deciding to subscribe.
With that out of the way, you have to get a backup service that provides backup space. Wasabi charges $.0049 per gigabyte of storage. For 1000GB, you’ll have to dish out only $5 per month. Downloading won’t cost you a dime, either, unlike with other IaaS services.
Acronis True Image has an option for a lifetime license, too. We don’t recommend getting it, though, because it only lets you backup to local storage, not the cloud. There are two subscription plans to choose from: Advanced and Premium.
Advanced costs $4.16 per month, or $49.99 a year, for 250GB. It includes full image backup, active disk cloning, universal restore and social media backup.
Premium is $8.33 a month, or $99.99 a year, for 1TB. It adds blockchain certification for files and electronic signatures to the list of features.
If you pay to increase the storage size, you’ll get it at a reduced price. That’s also true for the number of computers included in the plan.
CloudBerry Backup coupled with Wasabi has great prices, and though it requires you to purchase a license and pay for backup space, it’s less expensive than its opponent. CloudBerry Backup paired with Wasabi wins this round.
Security
You need to choose a backup service with strong security to keep your data safe. Its strength depends on the encryption used in-transit and at-rest, which protocol protects your files during transfer and other factors.
It’s best if the service qualifies as zero-knowledge, which means only you can read your files. Two-factor authentication is important, too, because it helps prevent access to your account if someone steals your password.
CloudBerry Backup supports those security methods, but their availability depends on the partner service, too. With the right partner, CloudBerry Backup can use up to AES 256-bit on the client side.
(Oh oh on that note,? Loverslab mod manager.
Many services only support server-side encryption. If you have it on the client side, only you can control the encryption key and read your data. If you choose to use client-side encryption, be sure to memorize your password because CloudBerry Backup won’t be able to reset it.
During transfer, the CloudBerry uses the TLS protocol to protect your files while versioning will help if some of them get hit by ransomware. Wasabi supports at-rest encryption and gives you two-factor authentication. Though it doesn’t have native private encryption it will work with CloudBerry Backup’s implementation.
Wasabi’s data centers are tier four which is the highest rating of the Uptime Institute with a 99.9 percent uptime guarantee. They have patrols, CCTV surveillance and biometric scanner to keep intruders out. Read this for more information about them.
Acronis’s data centers are secure, too, because they use biometric scanning, key cards, patrols and monitoring to ensure there are no breaches. Your data is also stored on multiple servers that are protected against natural disasters and fires.
Acronis True Image uses AES 256-bit encryption to scramble your files and the TLS/SSL protocol to protect them during transfer. You can encrypt files before sending them to Acronis’s servers, too. That requires you to enter your password, which only you know. The files will remain encrypted in the cloud until you decrypt them. That makes the service zero-knowledge.
There’s also a novel feature called Acronis Active Protection that helps against ransomware attacks. If it fails, you can rely on versioning to retrieve your files. Unfortunately, there’s no two-factor authentication.
Both services offer strong security features that protect your data, but CloudBerry Backup lets you partner with a service you want allowing to further tweak your backup plan. We’re awarding this round to CloudBerry Backup and Wasabi.
Speed
Initial backup can take a long time. How long depends on your internet service provider and how close you are to a server. The closer you are, the better your connection will be.
If the backup service allows you to set preferred transfer settings, increase the number of threads to boost speeds and throttle them if necessary, that’s even better. A block-level transfer algorithm will also help after the initial backup.
CloudBerry Backup isn’t the determining factor for speed, the third-party service is. In this case, that’s Wasabi. It has data centers in Oregon, North Virginia and one that will be operational in the Netherlands in January 2019.
We tested it from Southeast Asia and got an average speed of 19 min for a 1GB folder. That’s a great result considering the files were encrypted using CloudBerry Backup’s client-side encryption before being sent. Plus, your speeds will be even better if you are closer to Wasabi’s servers.
Acronis True Image isn’t slow. In fact, it surprised us with its speed because it only took 15 minutes for backup and recovery of a 1GB folder. We used the “optimal” setting for downloading, but there’s also a “maximum” one that is, presumably, even faster.
Considering the impressive results Acronis True Image showed in our tests, it’s clear that it’s faster than many services. CloudBerry Backup with Wasabi has great speeds, but it doesn’t quite match up.

Ease of Use
Ease of use should be straightforward. The better it is, the more you can focus on your work instead of worrying about your data. To ensure that, the desktop client should work on most operating systems and its interface, along with those of the web and mobile apps, should be pleasant and intuitive to use.
Setting up CloudBerry Backup is difficult. You have to add your account to the partner service you’re using manually and create the backup plan, which requires you to choose from many options. If you like to tinker with settings, you will love it, but mainstream users will want to steer clear.
If you consider yourself part of the mainstream, you should read our how to use CloudBerry Backup with Amazon S3 guide to get a sense of what you need to do to get it to run with Wasabi.
It’s not easy to recover files, either, but it enables you to create an intricate backup plan that suits your needs.
The desktop client for Windows has a clear interface that’s similar to Microsoft Office’s, but it’s not the most attractive we’ve seen. That said, it’s on our list of the best cloud backups for Windows. There are also clients for macOS and Linux. They don’t have all the features the Windows version has, though.
If you have a Linux distribution without a graphical user interface you can access the web interface from the desktop app. It has a modern and attractive design that is clear and lets you find what you need quickly.
There’s a web interface that you can access via the CloudBerry website, but it only works with Amazon S3.
Acronis True Image works on Windows and macOS. If you’re a Linux user, refer to our best online backup for Linux article to find a suitable service.
The desktop client is intuitive and easy to navigate, but its text should be bigger. There’s a menu on the left for navigating the app.
You can use it to backup everything, rather than having to select specific files. That takes more space, but it makes creating a backup plan easier. If you choose to do it that way, you can exclude files that you don’t want to backup. Plus, its notifications are useful for keeping you updated.
If you’re on the move, you can use the online dashboard to execute manual backups and recover files. That makes it useful for remote management. The online interface is clear and won’t confuse you.
CloudBerry Backup is great for power users, but Acronis True Image is easy to use and won’t confuse users, so this round goes to it.

The Verdict
CloudBerry Backup and Acronis True Image are third and fourth on our list of the best online backup services, respectively, and that’s borne out by the tie in this article. However, thanks to its slightly better value, greater flexibility and better security, we’ll inch a little closer to CloudBerry Backup here and declare it the winner, even if only by a hair.
Winner: CloudBerry Backup
That said, Acronis True Image is still a great choice because CloudBerry Backup doesn’t beat it by a large margin. It’s going to appeal to users who like their user experience to be straightforward, though, since it’s easy to use. That and its strong security options make it a good fit for those who don’t want to worry or think about their backup.
